Guilin Liangjiang Airport (KWL): the arrival guide

Arrival essentials · Verified 2026-10-26 · Rules change — confirm entry specifics with the National Immigration Administration before you fly

The short answer

The gateway for the Li River, Yangshuo and Longji rice terraces: a 240-hour-transit port with no rail link into town - shuttle bus or taxi over 28 km of road, so plan the last mile before you land.

What happens at immigration?

International arrivals clear a compact inspection hall; visa-free and 240-hour-transit travelers get the same short extra document check as the big hubs - onward ticket to a third country, printed. The arrival card can be submitted online before boarding, but paper cards are handed out too. English signage is thinner than PEK or PVG; have your first night's address written down. The official entry, visa-free and 240-hour transit lists live at the National Immigration Administration — check your nationality against our visa checker before you book.

How do you get connected and paid on landing?

Activate your eSIM before you land - KWL's China Mobile/Unicom/Telecom counters keep shop hours and thin out at night. Free Wi-Fi exists but usually wants a Chinese number, same as everywhere in China. For the full comparison of eSIM vs roaming (and what stays blocked), see our internet & eSIM guide. Alipay and WeChat Pay QR work at airport shops, shuttle ticket desks and taxis. ATMs and a currency-exchange counter sit near arrivals for the cash fallback. The complete playbook, including what to do when verification fails, is in payments in China and our rescue cards.

What is the best way into town?

No metro or rail link. The airport shuttle bus runs to the Civil Aviation ticketing plaza downtown in 40-50 minutes for about 20 yuan; metered taxis cover the 28 km in 30-50 minutes for roughly 80-120 yuan; DiDi picks up at the arrivals-level car park. For Yangshuo-bound travelers, some buses run direct - check the desk before paying for a taxi into town first.

Which Guilin rail station matches your flight?

Guilin has three stations and KWL has no rail link, so pick before you taxi. Guilin North has the most departures, including most trains to Yangshuo (22-25 min). Guilin West, on the Guiyang-Guangzhou high-speed line, runs to Yangshuo in 20-24 min. The central Guilin station keeps only a handful of slower services (35-50 min).

Times, fares and the full station comparison in the Guilin-Yangshuo train guide.

Landing late? Where should you sleep?

Shuttle departures thin out after about 21:00 - past that, the taxi rank is staffed to the last flight. Landing after midnight? Airport-adjacent hotels on the Liangjiang town side are 5-10 minutes away, and you can push into town in the morning. Airport-adjacent rooms trade convenience for distance from the sights — right call after 23:00, wrong call otherwise.

Where should you spend the first night?

Two Rivers & Four Lakes / downtown Guilin - walkable to Elephant Trunk Hill and the night markets, and the base for every Li River day tour. Shuttle 40-50 min or taxi about 40 min. Landing late? Sleep airport-side instead.
