City hubs

Beijing
Capital of imperial grandeur: the Great Wall, Forbidden City and hutong neighborhoods, with the most international flight options of any Chinese gateway.

Shanghai
China's most global city: the Bund skyline, French Concession lanes, day trips to water towns, and the easiest city in China for first-time visitors.

Chengdu
Panda base, teahouse culture and Sichuan food at the source; gateway to Jiuzhaigou and Tibet-permit routes.

Xi'an
Terracotta Army, intact Ming city walls and the Silk Road terminus; the third vertex of the classic Beijing-Xi'an-Shanghai triangle.

Guilin & Yangshuo
Karst scenery on the Li River; Yangshuo's countryside is China's most rewarding slow-travel region.

Hong Kong & Macau
Visa-easy bookends for a mainland trip: both count as third regions for 240-hour transit, and both have separate entry rules from the mainland.

Jilin & Changbai Mountain
Autumn's sacred mountain: Heaven Lake crater, vertical vegetation belts and Korea-border towns — the Northeast's 20-day foliage window peaks here first.

Shenyang & Benxi
Maple capital of Liaodong: Guanmen Mountain's crimson gorges, China Maple Avenue and Laobiangou streams, plus Panjin's Red Beach day trip — colors peak at frost's descent.

Chongqing
China's 8D mountain city: Hongya Cave's stacked nightscape, the train-through-building at Liziba, riverside hotpot and the Yangtze cableway — the most photogenic city in western China.

Hangzhou
"Paradise on earth" since the Song dynasty: a free, walkable West Lake ringed by pagodas and causeways, Longjing tea terraces in the hills and the Lingyin Temple grottoes - the most relaxed first-timer city after Shanghai.

Nanjing
Six dynasties of capital: the Republican-era Presidential Palace, the solemn Nanjing Massacre Memorial, free Zhongshan Mausoleum on tree-lined Purple Mountain - and a duck-obsessed food scene (salted duck, duck-blood vermicelli soup).

Guangzhou
Cantonese gastronomy capital - dim sum, roast goose and endless street food beside the Pearl River, plus colonial Shamian Island and the 600 m Canton Tower. The easiest Cantonese base and a high-speed hop to Hong Kong or Shenzhen.

Shenzhen
China's youngest megacity - a fishing village turned tech powerhouse of theme parks, skyscraper views and the best Chaoshan beef hotpot in the province, with a 14-minute high-speed hop to Hong Kong.

Wuhan
China's river-crossing megacity where the Yangtze meets the Han: the Yellow Crane Tower, the Hubei Provincial Museum with its 2,400-year-old bronze bells, the vast East Lake - and a breakfast culture (guozao) built on hot-dry noodles.

Changsha
Hunan's spicy after-dark capital: stinky tofu and milk tea on every corner, the Orange Isle statue of young Mao on the Xiang River, and the 1,000-year-old Yuelu Academy below Mount Yuelu.

Xiamen
China's most romantic island city: car-free Gulangyu with its colonial architecture and piano museums, Xiamen University and Nanputuo Temple, and a seafood scene built on shacha noodles - all on a slow island pace.

Qingdao
Seaside city of red roofs, green trees and blue sea: Zhanqiao Pier, the Badaguan villa lanes, Mount Lao seaside hikes and the Tsingtao Brewery museum - plus grilled clams and bagged draft beer on every corner.

Dalian
Northeast China's breezy seaside city: Asia's biggest city square at Xinghai, the cliffs and beaches of Binhai Road, Russo-Japanese heritage streets round Zhongshan Square, and a 1909 tram still running.

Harbin
The Ice City: a Russian-built old town of onion domes and cobbled Zhongyang Dajie, St. Sophia Cathedral - and, late December to February, the Ice and Snow World, the biggest ice-sculpture festival on earth.

Tianjin
China's most European-feeling city: concession-era villas on the Five Great Avenues, a riverside Italian-style town, the Porcelain House and the Tianjin Eye over the Hai River - plus the fastest Beijing day trip in the country (30 min by intercity).

Lijiang
UNESCO old town of cobbled lanes and canals beneath the 4,680 m Jade Dragon Snow Mountain - home of the Naxi people and the springboard to Shangri-La. Lijiang Station is 1.5 h from Dali by rail.

Sanya
China's tropical beach capital on Hainan: four very different bays (Sanya Bay, Dadonghai, Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay), island hopping and rainforest parks - plus the country's biggest duty-free mall. No metro: pick your bay first, then your transport.

Guiyang
Cool-summer capital of Guizhou at 1,100 m, springboard to Huangguoshu waterfall and the karst trails - with sour-soup fish and night-market streets running late.

Hero City on the Gan river: the pavilion that anchored 'preface to Tengwang', August 1st uprising sites and the Ferris-lit river nights - gateway to Lushan and Jingdezhen.

Nanning
The Green City, palm-flanked gateway to Vietnam: Detian waterfall border trips, old ASEAN-quarter streets and a leafier, slower pace than the coast.
