Frequently asked questions about Chengdu

  • What is the best time for the panda base?
Be at the 7:30 am opening. The pandas eat and climb until about 11 am, then sleep — late arrivals see furry backs.
  • How do I find Hua Hua, the famous panda?
Enter through the South Gate: Villa No. 6 is her home, followed by Villa No. 7 and the nursery halls along the boardwalks.
  • Should I do Chengdu or Chongqing first?
Either — they pair cleanly. High-speed rail links them in 1–1.5 hours, so most visitors do both back to back.
  • Is the Dujiangyan day trip worth it?
Yes. The UNESCO west line — Dujiangyan plus Qingcheng Mountain — is a straightforward day trip from Chengdu West station.
  • What must I eat in Chengdu?
Mapo tofu, dandan noodles, Zhong shuijiao dumplings, huiguorou twice-cooked pork and fuqi feipian — then a fresh-fish hotpot and a rural teahouse where locals go.
