The short answer
Chunxi Road & Taikoo Li (春熙路 / 太古里) is the default first-timer base. Panda base, teahouse culture and Sichuan food at the source; gateway to Jiuzhaigou and Tibet-permit routes.

Who should not stay where
- Light sleepers: avoid the Taikoo Li-facing side — the bar streets run past midnight.
- Suitcase rollers: think twice on guesthouse courtyards around Kuanzhai — stone slabs and steps; for a 7:30 panda-base start, Wenshu/north side beats Kuanzhai.
- Nightlife-dependent travelers should not base in Wenshu — the streets fold by 9pm, which is exactly its selling point as the quiet side of old Chengdu.
- Yulin-area older walk-ups (6-7 floors, no lift) are common in guesthouse conversions — families with elderly members should filter them out entirely.
