The independent field guide
China is the easiest “hard” destination you will ever visit.
Most of what you've heard about how difficult China is dates from before 2024. The visa wall fell, payments opened to foreign cards, and the trains got even better. We track the rules at their official source — so you can plan with facts, not folklore.
Policy data: National Immigration Administration lists (dated 2026-02-17 and 2026-05-28; source pages re-checked 2026-09-21). Arrivals: NIA H1 2026 briefing — 22.9m foreign entries, up 20.4% year on year. Source →

Common questions
Who can enter China without a visa in 2026?
Citizens of 50 countries—including nearly all of the EU, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico—can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits or transit, under the unilateral exemption policy in force as of February 17, 2026. Separately, 57 nationalities (Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam joined in August 2026) including the US and Canada can use the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit when flying into China and onward to a third country. Source: National Immigration Administration, en.nia.gov.cn.
How does the 240-hour visa-free transit work?
It replaced the old 72/144-hour schemes on December 17, 2024. You fly from country A into China and continue to a different country or region C—your onward ticket is checked at check-in and at immigration, and it cannot be a return to A. Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan count as third regions, which is why 'fly into Shanghai, out of Hong Kong' has become the most popular open-jaw routing. You may travel between permitted provinces during the 10 days, not just the arrival city.
Can foreigners pay in China without a Chinese bank account?
Yes, easily since 2023-2024: link an international Visa/Mastercard to Alipay or WeChat Pay and pay by QR everywhere, including street food and taxis. Card-only limits: single transactions up to about USD 100 at merchants... (continued in payments guide)
Should I book Chinese trains on 12306 or Trip.com?
Use the official 12306 app or english-version 12306.cn when your passport verification works and you want zero fees; use Trip.com when you want an English interface, auto-filled foreigner flow and acceptance of international cards, at the cost of a small per-ticket service fee on some routes. Both issue the same official e-tickets with the same real-name ID binding to your passport.
