Tips from our own trips to Guangzhou

  • Pearl River cruises run ¥98–210 from four piers — Tianzi, Dashatou, Canton Tower and Haixinsha West. Confirm the pier before paying: tickets are generally non-refundable, and boarding at the wrong pier is the most common loss. Tianzi or Haixinsha covers the core sights.
  • The locals’ version is the ¥2 water bus (S line) or the ¥2 tram along the river to Wanshengwei — same skyline, a tenth of the price.
  • Canton Tower after 16:00 gets you daylight and the light-up in one ticket.
  • The Sacred Heart Cathedral photographs empty on weekday mornings before 09:30.
  • Skip the hour-long queues at the famous morning-tea houses: Yindeng Shifu or Maidaohui (¥70–85) is where locals actually go; Bing Sheng Private Kitchen is the book-ahead splurge tier.
  • Beef offal and noodles belong in scruffy old-town shops — Wenji’s hand-pulled noodle bowl with big soft beef tripe is ¥18.
  • Baiyun airport’s T1 is closed and T3 has no direct metro — ride the intercity from T2 or the metro to Gaozeng plus the shuttle, and add 20–30 minutes to any T3 flight.
