  • Hongya Cave
  • Wulong Karst

fiery hotpot. Fiery hotpot and neon river nights.

How do you arrive in Chongqing?

CKG (Jiangbei) handle the international arrivals; Chongqing North is the high-speed rail entry point.

Tips from our own trips to Chongqing

  • Jiefangbei/Jiaochangkou is the first-timer base — metro everywhere and food streets on the doorstep. Guanyinqiao is the better-value alternative with its own night market.
  • Skip the scenic-area hotpot chains: the real thing hides in old-community air-raid-shelter hotpot shops, around ¥80 a head.
  • “Weila” (mild) in Chongqing is still spicy. If in doubt order the yuanyang divided pot — and pack stomach medicine.
  • The two main rail stations are far apart. Confirm Chongqing North vs Chongqing West before booking.
  • Navigation regularly fails in the 8D terrain. The fix is asking a local, not trusting the arrow.
  • Three days runs about ¥300–500 a head excluding hotels. Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons; summer has the best night views.

Where should you stay in Chongqing?

Jiefangbei (Yuzhong) is the default first-timer base — first-timers — skyline and hotpot core. Before paying, check the property's guest policy and, for smaller hotels, confirm the front desk can register a foreign passport — licensing rules still exclude some budget properties. How do you get in from the airport?

CKG: Metro Line 3/10 from Jiangbei Airport, 40-50 min; Line 10 serves the Hongya Cave side. The monorail handles hills that defeat taxis; late arrivals pay about 60-80 yuan by DiDi to Yuzhong.

Frequently asked questions about Chongqing

  • When does Hongya Cave light up?
Around 19:00. Enter on floor 11 and exit on floor 1 — the building "changes altitude" as you descend.
  • Is the Hongya Cave "fast-track" ticket real?
No. There is no fast-track at Hongya Cave — anyone selling one is scamming you.
  • Where can I watch the train pass through the building?
At Liziba, from the purpose-built viewing platform under the track.
  • I cannot handle spicy food — can I still eat in Chongqing?
Order the yuanyang divided pot. Note that "weila" (mild) in Chongqing is still genuinely spicy — packing stomach medicine is not overkill.
  • Yangtze River cableway — one way or return?
One way is enough; the return queue is long. Book online ahead of time.
  • Chongqing North station or Chongqing West station?
Check your ticket before booking hotels — the two stations are far apart. North is the convenient one (Metro Line 3).
