Xi'an to Chengdu by High-Speed Train

TL;DR

A: The Xi'an–Chengdu line tunnels under the Qinling mountains for 3-4 hours — dozens of G and D trains daily from Xi'an North (西安北) to Chengdu East (成都东), fastest 3 h 05, second class ¥263-316 on almost every departure. Book a window seat; half the route is bridges and tunnels.

What’s the short answer?

Dozens of G and D trains a day run Xi’an North → Chengdu East in 3 to 4 hours (fastest 3 h 05), second class ¥263-316, first class ¥421-506. The line opened in 2017 and cut a 12-hour journey to three; it runs almost entirely on viaducts and through the Qinling tunnel chain, which is why the fare is a step above flatland routes of the same length.

Which stations?

Board at Xi’an North (西安北) unless a train from the new Xi’an East suits your hotel; arrive at Chengdu East (成都东). The fine print:

  • Xi’an North — every fast train calls here; Metro Line 2 runs to the Bell Tower in ~30 minutes
  • Xi’an East (西安东) — a few services start here and reach Xi’an North 25 minutes later; slightly pricier; use whichever is closer
  • Xi’an Station (西安) — slow conventional trains only (9-15 h to Chengdu); tourists don’t want it
  • Chengdu East — where all the fast trains arrive; Metro Lines 2 and 7, six stops to Chunxi Road, seven to Tianfu Square

Nearly every train stops at Hanzhong (汉中) about 1 h 10-1 h 45 in — a feasible stopover if you’re breaking the journey.
