What Can You Do in Zhengzhou in 3 Days?

Published 2026-09-24 · Updated 2026-10-26 · Itineraries

TL;DR

A: Three days is right if you treat Zhengzhou as a hub, not a sightseeing pile-up: Day 1 the Shaolin Temple day trip from Zhengzhou East (Dengfeng, ~2h by intercity rail), Day 2 the Henan Museum plus the old town (Erqi Tower, Shang city wall), Day 3 a Luoyang run or the Songyang Academy line. Book the museum 5 days ahead, ride metro Lines 1/2/5/8, and remember Zhengzhou East is your high-speed hub — Zhengzhou Station is the older one by the old town.

What’s the short answer?

Zhengzhou is central China’s high-speed rail crossroads and the gateway to Shaolin Temple — not a city you “collect” in one sitting. Its real job in a first China trip is to be your launch pad: land here, ride out to the Songshan mountains for Shaolin, and continue to Luoyang for the Longmen Grottoes. The city itself rewards one calm day — the free Henan Museum and the walkable old town — and then you move on. This route is built exactly that way so you never backtrack.

Why does this Zhengzhou route work?

Most visitors either skip Zhengzhou entirely or try to cram Shaolin, the museum and Luoyang into a single frantic day. This plan follows the geography instead:

  • Day 1 sends you to Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng — a ~2-hour intercity-rail hop from Zhengzhou East — and back, because Shaolin alone is a full day of walking.
  • Day 2 keeps you inside the city: the Henan Museum in the morning (free, but it must be booked), then the Erqi Memorial Tower and the Shang-dynasty city wall on foot.
  • Day 3 is a choice — push west to Luoyang (36–44 min by high-speed rail) or stay out at the Songyang Academy side of Songshan — so you end the trip moving forward, not looping back.

Day 1 — How do you reach Shaolin Temple from Zhengzhou in a day?

#StopCostGetting there
1Zhengzhou East Station—Metro Lines 1/5/8 to Zhengzhou East
2Intercity rail to Shaolin (Dengfeng)from ¥53 (about $7.50)Zhengzhou East → Shaolin scenic area, ~2h; bus also runs from Zhengzhou Bus Center (¥30+)
3Shaolin Temple & Pagoda ForestCombo ticket ¥80 (about $11)Shuttle / walk inside the scenic area
4Martial-arts performanceIncludedShowtimes ~10:30; free with the combo ticket
5Sanhuangzhai cliff walkCable car one-way ¥70 (about $10)Cable car stops selling at 16:00 — start early

How the day flows: Take an early intercity train from Zhengzhou East so you reach Dengfeng near opening. Watch the martial-arts show first, then walk the temple and pagoda forest, and save the Sanhuangzhai cliff path for the afternoon — wear grippy shoes, because the plank walk is steep. Be back at the rail stop by mid-afternoon; the last trains fill up and you want to be in the city for dinner.

Three local shortcuts most visitors miss:

  • Book the Shaolin combo ticket 1–7 days ahead on the official “Songshan Tourism” WeChat account and bring your passport — there is no “fast-track” reseller at the gate, and the low-price “VIP” pitches outside are scams.
  • Zhengzhou East, not Zhengzhou Station, is your Shaolin/Luoyang gateway — East is the high-speed hub (Lines 1/5/8); the older Zhengzhou Station sits by the old town (Lines 1/10).
  • Dengfeng has no passenger rail station, so the intercity bus or rail-to-Dengfeng road transfer is the only real approach; ignore any blog claiming a “Dengfeng East high-speed station.”

Day 2 — What is worth seeing inside Zhengzhou itself?

1Henan MuseumFree (book ahead)Guanhutun Stn (L2), Exit C, 8–12 min walk; or Nongye Daxue Stn (L7)
2Erqi Memorial Tower & Dehua StreetFreeErqi Guangchang Stn (L1 / L3)
3Zhengzhou Shang City Wall ruinsFreeDongdajie Stn (L2 / L3) area
4Old-town dinner (hui mian)¥15–30 (about $2–4) per bowlWalk or metro back to the old town

How the day flows: Reserve the Henan Museum for the morning — its nine headline relics (the 8,000-year bone flute, the bronze vessels) are the best single hour of context for anywhere in Henan. Afternoon is for the Erqi Tower and a slow walk along Dehua Street and the Shang city-wall ruins; finish with a bowl of hui mian in the old town. The museum releases slots 5 days ahead at 17:00, so set a reminder before you fly.

Three local shortcuts most visitors miss:

  • The Henan Museum is free but released only 5 days ahead at 17:00, and it is closed Mondays — foreign passports can book on the official account, so do not rely on buying at the door.
  • Guanhutun (L2) is the closer museum exit (8–12 min walk); the L7 Nongye Daxue exit is a real alternative if Line 2 is crowded.
  • Hui mian is a meal, not a snack — one bowl is plenty; order “mild” if you are unsure about pepper, and skip the tourist-front restaurants on the Dehua Street main drag in favor of side-street branches.

Day 3 — Should you add Luoyang or stay around Songshan?

#StopCostGetting there
1High-speed to Luoyang Longmen¥61–79 (about $9–11)Zhengzhou East → Luoyang Longmen, 36–44 min
2Luoyang old town (optional)Free to walkLine 2 from Luoyang Longmen into the city
3Songyang Academy (optional, stay in Zhengzhou)Separate ticketIntercity rail/bus toward Dengfeng, then taxi
4Yellow River cultural park (optional)Check locallyTaxi ~1h north of the city

How the day flows: If Luoyang is on your list, take the 36–44 minute train to Luoyang Longmen and spend the day there (Longmen Grottoes need their own advance booking — see our Luoyang page). If you would rather stay near Zhengzhou, the Songyang Academy on Songshan’s Taishi side is the calmer choice; there is no cable car on Taishi, so pick a line that matches your legs. A third full-day option east of the city is the Only Henan immersive-theatre park — a whole day of live drama performances, best booked ahead on the official account.

Three local shortcuts most visitors miss:

  • Luoyang Longmen Station is the one you want — it is the high-speed hub next to the grottoes; the older Luoyang Station is a different corner of the city.
  • April is reported to be the one peak month — Luoyang’s peony festival fills hotels and trains across the region, so book rail and rooms early if you travel then.
  • Do not try to bolt Shaolin, the museum and Luoyang into one day — each is a half-day-plus; the realistic move is Shaolin Day 1, museum Day 2, Luoyang Day 3.

What to eat in Zhengzhou (and where)

Zhengzhou food is hearty, cheap and soup-driven — a bowl of hui mian and a bowl of hu la tang is the local baseline. Good stops, all reachable by metro:

  • Heji Hui Mian — the city’s flagship braised-lamb-noodle brand; about ¥40–60 (about $6–8) per person, multiple branches near the old town and Zhengzhou East.
  • Xiaoji Sanxian Hui Mian — the “three-fresh” seafood-broth rival to Heji; about ¥40–60 (about $6–8), branches on Jinshui and Wenhua roads.
  • Cai Ji Zhengjiao (steamed dumplings) — century-old dumpling house, pork or three-fresh, about ¥20–40 (about $3–6); near Erqi Guangchang / Dehua Street.
  • Ge Ji Men Bing — braised shredded-pancake hotpot, a carb-heavy local classic; about ¥30–50 (about $4–7), old-town branches.
  • Fang Zhongshan Hu La Tang — peppery breakfast soup with fried bread; about ¥10–20 (about $1.50–3), many branches, arrive early.

Practical notes

Zhengzhou works as a rail hub first and a museum town second — book the Henan Museum before anything else, and treat Shaolin as a full-day outing. The rest:

  • Payments: Alipay and WeChat Pay both accept foreign cards after in-app setup; carry a little cash for old-town breakfast stalls that are cash-only. See our payments guide.
  • Reservations: Henan Museum 5 days ahead at 17:00 (closed Mondays); Shaolin 1–7 days ahead on the official account; foreign passports work on both. Trip.com also sells a foreign-passport ticket tier for many Henan sights.
  • Metro: Lines 1/2/5/8 plus the airport line cover the core; use the Alipay transit code set to “Zhengzhou.” Zhengzhou East is Lines 1/5/8; the old town clusters at Erqi Guangchang (L1/L3).
  • Stations: Zhengzhou East = high-speed (your Shaolin/Luoyang hub); Zhengzhou Station = older, by the old town (Lines 1/10). The two are ~20 min apart on Line 1. See the 12306 train guide.
  • Airport: Xinzheng (CGO) is ~30–37 km out; the Zhengji intercity rail from Zhengzhou East reaches the airport in ~36 min, or metro Line 2 / Chengjiao line to the city in 60–80 min.

More on the city: the Zhengzhou destination page. Plan the classic “Zhengzhou landing → Shaolin → Luoyang” line with our Luoyang 3-day itinerary — the two cities are 36–44 minutes apart by high-speed rail. If you need a hotel that accepts foreign passports, see hotels that accept foreign passports, and land with data using the eSIM guide.

Common questions

Where is Shaolin Temple — in Zhengzhou or Luoyang?

Neither exactly: it sits in Dengfeng, which is much closer to Zhengzhou — about 2 hours from Zhengzhou East by intercity rail and bus. Luoyang does have buses to Dengfeng, but the classic route is land in Zhengzhou, do Shaolin, then continue to Luoyang.

Are 3 days enough for Zhengzhou?

Yes — with a caveat. Zhengzhou itself rewards one day (Henan Museum plus the old town); the other two days go to Shaolin and either Luoyang or the Songshan side. The city is a hub, not a sightseeing pile-up, so three days is the right frame.

Zhengzhou East or Zhengzhou Station — which one do I want?

For high-speed trains to Luoyang and the Shaolin intercity, Zhengzhou East. The older Zhengzhou Station sits by the old town near Erqi Square. Both are on metro Line 1, about 20 minutes apart — check which one your ticket names.

How do I book the free Henan Museum as a foreigner?

Slots are released 5 days ahead at 17:00 on the museum's official booking channel, and foreign passports can register. It is closed Mondays. Third-party 'paid fast entry' offers are not authorized — book the free slot yourself and show up with your passport.

How do I get from Zhengzhou to the Longmen Grottoes?

High-speed rail from Zhengzhou East to Luoyang Longmen Station takes 36-44 minutes (second class ¥61-79, about $9-11), then a 10-minute taxi or bus 81. The grottoes need their own advance booking — see our Luoyang itinerary.

When is the best time to visit Zhengzhou and Songshan?

April-May and September-October. Summer brings thunderstorms that can close the Songshan scenic area temporarily, and the intercity cable car stops running at 16:00 year-round, so always start a Shaolin day early.
