The short answer
Hailar City (海拉尔市区) is the default first-timer base. China's greatest grassland - an ocean of green to the horizon, the meandering Morigele river, yurt camps under star-filled skies, and Russian-border villages. A June-to-September destination; you will need a car or a shared van.

Who should not stay where
- No public transport reaches the grasslands - if you will not charter a car or join a shared-van tour, base in Hailar and take day tours instead of planning the loop.
- Yurt and log-cabin nights are the point of Hulunbuir but facilities are basic (thin walls, limited hot water, few English speakers) - if that sounds miserable, sleep in Hailar and visit the grasslands by day.
- July-August peak: yurt camps and Enhe/Shiwei guesthouses need 20+ days lead time; June and September are the value months.
