The short answer
Zhangzha (gully mouth) (＝"九寨沟市区") is the default first-timer base. Fairy-tale valley of turquoise lakes and stacked waterfalls in northern Sichuan - reached by a 1h39m bullet train from Chengdu to Huanglong-Jiuzhai station, then a 2-hour bus to the gully mouth.

Who should not stay where
- Zhangzha (the gate town) is the only first-visit answer; Pengfeng for earliest entry; Tibetan homestays for character.
