The short answer
People's Square & Nanjing East Road (人民广场 / 南京东路步行街) is the default first-timer base. China's most global city: the Bund skyline, French Concession lanes, day trips to water towns, and the easiest city in China for first-time visitors.
People's Square & Nanjing East Road 人民广场 / 南京东路步行街

Who should not stay where
- People's Square is the no-brainer default — its only real warning is: if river views are sold out, don't force it.
- Budget-sensitive travelers and street-breakfast lovers should not pay Bund prices — two blocks toward People's Square cuts roughly a third off the rate.
- Plane-tree district (Hengfu): wrong for big suitcases, mobility limits and narrow lanes — and wrong for early Hongqiao trains (45+ min to the rail hub).
- Captain Hostel on Fuzhou Road accepts Chinese ID holders only — it is deliberately absent from this list.
