The short answer
Pingjiang Road & Guanqian Street (平江路 / 观前街) is the default first-timer base. China's garden-and-canal city: UNESCO classical gardens, Ming-Qing waterways you can walk end to end, silk and Kunqu opera - and the easiest day trip from Shanghai (25 min by high-speed rail).

Who should not stay where
- Skipping the old town for Jinji Lake? Only stay lakeside if you accept 30-40 min metro+walk to the gardens - garden-first travelers should base in Pingjiang/Guanqian.
- Heavy luggage: the old town's stone lanes and one-way streets make taxis detour and suitcases a chore - Shilu or Suzhou Station side is kinder.
- Garden tickets need real-name advance booking (foreign passports use the 'non-mainland' ticket type on Trip.com) - do not count on gate tickets.
