The short answer
Liuxiang / Zhonglou Street / Food Street (柳巷 / 钟楼街 / 食品街商圈) is the default first-timer base. Shanxi's capital of vinegar and coal-money heritage: Jinci Temple's 1,400-year halls, the Shanxi Museum's trove - and the rail node for Pingyao, Datong's grottoes and Wutai Shan.

Who should not stay where
- Liuxiang / Zhonglou Street is the eat-and-walk core; light sleepers should ask for courtyard- or rear-facing rooms.
- Changfeng trades night markets for new hotels and Fenhe riverside walks — pick it for comfort, not atmosphere.
- Line 1 reaches Taiyuan South station direct; a station hotel is the easy call for Pingyao- or Datong-bound mornings.
- Jinci and the Ancient County Town have no metro — a dawn walk to Jinci Temple is the one reason to sleep out there.
