- The city is huge with a single north-south metro line — the district you pick decides your daily driving time.
- Bazaar-first travelers stay at Erdaoqiao; museum-and-comfort travelers take Hongshan/Youhao; airport- and Tianchi-bound take the Railway Bureau north.
- Security checks are routine at hotels, metro and sights — carry your passport at all times; hotels file the foreigner temporary-stay registration for you.
- Old-town rooms near the bazaar and Hetian Street hear the night market past 23:00 — ask for high floors and non-street rooms.
