Zhongshan Road / Old Town (中山路 / 老城 · 思明老城核心) is the default first-timer base. China's most romantic island city: car-free Gulangyu with its colonial architecture and piano museums, Xiamen University and Nanputuo Temple, and a seafood scene built on shacha noodles - all on a slow island pace.

Who should not stay where
- Zhongshan Road for the ferry and old-town eats; Yundang for calm; Hulishan/Jimei for sea-view resort value.
