What Is China Like in October?

TL;DR

A: October is China's finest weather month — crisp 7-28°C days, the year's best visibility — split in two by Golden Week (Oct 1-7): domestic travel frenzy with 2-3× hotel prices and sell-out trains, then a genuinely glorious fortnight after the 8th. Come October 8-31 if you can choose.

What’s the short answer?

October is the best-weather month in most of China — and the worst-priced week. Golden Week (Oct 1-7, 2026 ran Oct 1-7) moves the entire country: 2-3× hotel rates, sold-out trains, Wall-to-wall crowds at the Wall. From October 8 the wave collapses and what’s left is the year’s finest fortnight: clear skies, autumn color starting in the north, gentle temperatures everywhere.

What October is good for

Autumn foliage routes in the northeast (Benxi’s maple valleys, Changbai’s slopes — our northeast autumn guide), crisp Great Wall days, and the Li River at low-water clarity. Zhangjiajie’s mist, famously, doesn’t cooperate in any month — that one’s luck.

What to watch

Avoid Oct 1-7 unless the holiday atmosphere IS the goal — and if it is, book trains the morning the 15-day window opens and hotels 6-8 weeks out (booking calendar). After the 20th, northern evenings drop toward single digits — one warm layer settles it.

Before you fly

Entry checker → arrival card online → payments set up at home. The 240-hour transit covers a 10-day slice of the month if your passport qualifies.
