Beijing to Xi'an by High-Speed Train

TL;DR
A: Roughly 25-35 G trains a day run Beijing West (北京西) → Xi'an North (西安北) in 4 to 6 hours — fastest about 4 h 10 — second class ¥470-580. Overnight D sleepers (~7.5-12.5 h, second-class berth from ¥350) exist if you'd rather sleep than sightsee. Book the 15-day window for holidays.
What’s the short answer?
The Beijing–Xi’an trunk route covers 1,216 km in as little as 4 h 10: ~25-35 G trains daily from Beijing West (北京西) to Xi’an North (西安北), second class ¥470-580, first ¥753-922. Four pairs of overnight D trains with sleepers (second-class berth ¥350-373) cover the “arrive rested, skip a hotel night” play. This is the spine of the classic first-timer route — our 10-day Beijing → Xi’an → Shanghai itinerary uses exactly this train.

Which stations?
Depart Beijing West (北京西) — Metro Line 7 or 9 — and a handful of trains start from Beijing Fengtai (北京丰台); always glance at your ticket. A few services leave from Beijing South. Every high-speed train arrives at Xi’an North (西安北), 10 km north of the walled city: Metro Line 2 runs to the Bell Tower area in about 30 minutes, and a DiDi from the rank costs ¥25-40. Xi’an Station (西安) near the city wall is conventional trains only — don’t let a taxi driver take you there for a G ticket.
The anchor non-stops to know: G55 (~08:15 → 12:26), G87 (14:05 → 18:20), G91-class departures — morning trains sell out first.
The ancient-capitals corridor: stops worth breaking for
This line rides the spine of early Chinese history, and some services stop at successive ancient capitals — one or two well-chosen stopovers turn a transfer into the trip’s best day. The limited-stop anchors pause only at Shijiazhuang, Zhengzhou East or Luoyang Longmen; the all-stopper services (G657-class) call at nearly every historic city on the line. Read the stop list, not just the duration:
- Anyang East (安阳东) — the Shang-dynasty capital at Yinxu: oracle bones, the earliest systematic writing in East Asia
- Handan East (邯郸东) — the Warring States Zhao capital: Congtai Park, the Guangfu Ancient City walls, and the birthplace of two tai chi styles
- Zhengzhou East (郑州东) — the modern hub with the Henan Museum’s bronzes; the Shaolin Temple is a day trip away
- Luoyang Longmen (龙门) — the stopover we’d actually book: the Longmen Grottoes (UNESCO) are ~30 minutes from the platform, April brings the peony festival, and the Luoyang 3-day itinerary starts from the station (city notes)
Stop patterns shift with each timetable revision — verify on the live booking page before planning a break.
